Social Concerns Commission

The Social Concerns Commission embraces Catholic Social Teaching, inspired by God’s Word, and seeks to Live the Gospel by offering our community educational and service opportunities to promote love, respect, social justice and advocacy.

Each year at our Fair Trade Fair held in November, vendors representing both local and international interests gather to sell clothing, jewelry, handbags, toys, food and more. All items are produced under fair trade guidelines ensuring that the laborer receives a fair wage while supporting environmentally sustainable practices.  Search the Events Calendar to find the date of this year’s Fair Trade Fair.

We put together a short free booklet called Earth Friendly Habits, with easy and creative ideas to put into practice every month of the year.

Over the years, the Social Concerns Commission has implemented a wide variety of creative opportunities seeking to make God’s Kingdom come here on Earth.  Some past projects include Christmas Giving Trees that provided over 1,000 gifts to needy children and adults, Mother’s Day collections for Womankind and women’s shelters, collections for veterans, and feeding victims of human trafficking.

Our Holy Land Committee works to build awareness of issues facing Christians in the Holy Land, and to enhance our relationship with Holy Family Parish, Gaza.   St. Basil also has a prayer partnership with Good Shepherd Parish in Jericho.

To see upcoming Social Concerns Commission meetings (usually monthly) and events, use the “Ministry/Organizer” filter button on the main calendar and choose Social Concerns Commission, and only those events will be visible.  Choose summary to see a compact full list.
