 Choosing a Sponsor

A Sponsor for Confirmation should be:
  • A practicing, faith-filled Catholic adult or young adult already fully initiated into the faith
  • May be male or female and must be at least 16 years of age
  • May not be the parent of the Candidate but can be the Candidate’s Baptismal godparent
  • Able to form a relationship with the Candidate and willing to share his/her own experience of faith
  • Willing to give the time to participate in the sacramental preparation process and to pray for the Candidate
Your Sponsor must provide a Sponsor Certificate to St Basil.
This form will need to be signed by their home parish priest and returned to Judy Paffilas at the Parish Office.  This certificate confirms that they are a registered and participating member of the Christian community.

Choosing a Confirmation Name

When parents bring an infant to the Church to be baptized, the first question they are asked is: “What name do you give your child?” Through the name that we receive in Baptism, God tells us: “I have called you by name, you are mine.” (YOUCAT page 120, #201) (Catechism of the Catholic Church – CCC 2156-2159, 2165)

In choosing your Confirmation name, keep the following in mind:
• You may be confirmed in your Baptismal name. By keeping your Baptismal name, rather than choosing a new Confirmation name, it reaffirms your Baptismal name and strengthens the connection between the two sacraments.
• If a new name is chosen, selecting a saint’s name is common practice. There are no better examples than the saints and no better helpers. If my namesake is a saint, I have a friend with God. (YOUCAT page 120, #202) (CCC 2156-2159, 2163-2167)
Research into the lives of the saints should be an important part of your decision. Visit www.catholicsaints.info for help picking a Confirmation name.  Choose a saint you admire!

Overview

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that: “Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace…the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost“. This seal of the Holy Spirit marks our total belonging to Christ, our enrollment in His service forever:

  • It unites us more firmly to Christ
  • It increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us
  • It renders our bond with the Church more perfectly
  • It gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ

This is an important time for our teens because they will have many opportunities to reflect upon how they are living the life of Christ in the Spirit from day to day.

Students wishing to be confirmed must meet the requirements of the St. Basil Life Teen Confirmation Program. These requirements are for all Confirmation candidates, even those attending Catholic high schools. A 10th grader who does not meet the requirements will have the opportunity to be confirmed with the next Confirmation class.

Requirements for Confirmation include:
Attendance to at least six (6) Life Nights during their 9th grade year
  • Attendance to at least six (6) Life Nights during their 10th grade year
  • Attendance to at least one (1) Life Teen weekend retreat in either your 9th or 10th grade year
(two are offered each school year, so four possible chances to get your one retreat in!)
  • Attendance at three (3) Confirmation preparation sessions during their 10th grade year
  • Attendance at Confirmation Liturgy Mass
